1 | When the Event inevitable cometh to pass, | When the event befalleth - | When the great event comes to pass, | ||
2 | Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming. | There is no denying that it will befall - | There is no belying its coming to pass-- | ||
3 | (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; | Abasing (some), exalting (others); | Abasing (one party), exalting (the other), | ||
4 | When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, | When the earth is shaken with a shock | When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking, |
||
5 | And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, | And the hills are ground to powder | And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling, | ||
6 | Becoming dust scattered abroad, | So that they become a scattered dust, | So that they shall be as scattered dust. | ||
7 | And ye shall be sorted out into three classes. | And ye will be three kinds: | And you shall be three sorts. | ||
8 | Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand? | (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? | Then (as to) the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand! | ||
9 | And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? | And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand? | And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! | ||
10 | And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter). | And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: | And the foremost are the foremost, | ||
11 | These will be those Nearest to Allah: | Those are they who will be brought nigh | These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah), | ||
12 | In Gardens of Bliss: | In gardens of delight; | In the gardens of bliss. | ||
13 | A number of people from those of old, | A multitude of those of old | A numerous company from among the first, | ||
14 | And a few from those of later times. | And a few of those of later time. | And a few from among the latter. | ||
15 | (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones), | On lined couches, | On thrones decorated, | ||
16 | Reclining on them, facing each other. | Reclining therein face to face. | Reclining on them, facing one another. | ||
17 | Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness), | There wait on them immortal youths | Round about them shall go youths never altering in age, | ||
18 | With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains: | With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring | With goblets and ewers and a cup of pure drink; | ||
19 | No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication: | Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, | They shall not be affected with headache thereby, nor shall they get exhausted, | ||
20 | And with fruits, any that they may select: | And fruit that they prefer | And fruits such as they choose, | ||
21 | And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire. | And flesh of fowls that they desire. | And the flesh of fowl such as they desire. | ||
22 | And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,- | And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, | And pure, beautiful ones, | ||
23 | Like unto Pearls well-guarded. | Like unto hidden pearls, | The like of the hidden pearls: | ||
24 | A Reward for the deeds of their past (life). | Reward for what they used to do. | A reward for what they used to do. | ||
25 | Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,- | There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination | They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, | ||
26 | Only the saying, "Peace! Peace". | (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. | Except the word peace, peace. | ||
27 | The Companions of the Right Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Right Hand? | And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? | And the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand! | ||
28 | (They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns, | Among thornless lote-trees | Amid thornless lote-trees, | ||
29 | Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,- | And clustered plantains, | And banana-trees (with fruits), one above another. | ||
30 | In shade long-extended, | And spreading shade, | And extended shade, | ||
31 | By water flowing constantly, | And water gushing, | And water flowing constantly, | ||
32 | And fruit in abundance. | And fruit in plenty | And abundant fruit, | ||
33 | Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden, | Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, | Neither intercepted nor forbidden, | ||
34 | And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high. | And raised couches; | And exalted thrones. | ||
35 | We have created (their Companions) of special creation. | Lo! We have created them a (new) creation | Surely We have made them to grow into a (new) growth, | ||
36 | And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), - | And made them virgins, | Then We have made them virgins, | ||
37 | Beloved (by nature), equal in age,- | Lovers, friends, | Loving, equals in age, | ||
38 | For the Companions of the Right Hand. | For those on the right hand; | For the sake of the companions of the right hand. | ||
39 | A (goodly) number from those of old, | A multitude of those of old | A numerous company from among the first, | ||
40 | And a (goodly) number from those of later times. | And a multitude of those of later time. | And a numerous company from among the last. | ||
41 | The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? | And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? | And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! | ||
42 | (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, | In scorching wind and scalding water | In hot wind and boiling water, | ||
43 | And in the shades of Black Smoke: | And shadow of black smoke, | And the shade of black smoke, | ||
44 | Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: | Neither cool nor refreshing. | Neither cool nor honorable. | ||
45 | For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), | Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury | Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. | ||
46 | And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! | And used to persist in the awful sin. | And they persisted in the great violation. | ||
47 | And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- | And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, | And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? | ||
48 | "(We) and our fathers of old?" | And also our forefathers? | Or our fathers of yore? | ||
49 | Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, | Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time | Say: The first and the last, | ||
50 | "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. | Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. | Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. | ||
51 | "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- | Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, | Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! | ||
52 | "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. | Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum | Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, | ||
53 | "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, | And will fill your bellies therewith; | And fill (your) bellies with it; | ||
54 | "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: | And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, | Then drink over it of boiling water; | ||
55 | "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" | Drinking even as the camel drinketh. | And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. | ||
56 | Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! | This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. | This is their entertainment on the day of requital. | ||
57 | It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? | We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? | We have created you, why do you not then assent? | ||
58 | Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- | Have ye seen that which ye emit? | Have you considered the seed? | ||
59 | Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? | Do ye create it or are We the Creator? | Is it you that create it or are We the creators? | ||
60 | We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated | We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, | We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, | ||
61 | from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. | That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. | In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. | ||
62 | And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? | And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? | And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? | ||
63 | See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? | Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? | Have you considered what you sow? | ||
64 | Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? | Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? | Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? | ||
65 | Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, | If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: | If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin tb lament: | ||
66 | (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): | Lo! we are laden with debt! | Surely we are burdened with debt: | ||
67 | "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" | Nay, but we are deprived! | Nay! we are deprived. | ||
68 | See ye the water which ye drink? | Have ye observed the water which ye drink? | Have you considered the water which you drink? | ||
69 | Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? | Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? | Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? | ||
70 | Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? | If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? | If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? | ||
71 | See ye the Fire which ye kindle? | Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; | Have you considered the fire which you strike? | ||
72 | Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? | Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? | Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? | ||
73 | We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. | We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. | We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. | ||
74 | Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! | Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. | Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. | ||
75 | Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars,- | Nay, I swear by the places of the stars - | But nay! I swear by the falling of stars; | ||
76 | And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew,- | And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew - | And most surely it is a very great oath if you only knew; | ||
77 | That this is indeed a qur'an Most Honourable, | That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an | Most surely it is an honored Quran, | ||
78 | In Book well-guarded, | In a Book kept hidden | In a book that is protected | ||
79 | Which none shall touch but those who are clean: | Which none toucheth save the purified, | None shall touch it save the purified ones. | ||
80 | A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. | A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds. | A revelation by the Lord of the worlds. | ||
81 | Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem? | Is it this Statement that ye scorn, | Do you then hold this announcement in contempt? | ||
82 | And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false? | And make denial thereof your livelihood? | And to give (it) the lie you make your means of subsistence. | ||
83 | Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat,- | Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying) | Why is it not then that when it (soul) comes up to the throat, | ||
84 | And ye the while (sit) looking on,- | And ye are at that moment looking | And you at that time look on-- | ||
85 | But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not,- | And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not - | And We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see-- |
||
86 | Then why do ye not,- If you are exempt from (future) account,- | Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us), | Then why is it not-- if you are not held under authority-- | ||
87 | Call back the soul, if ye are true (in the claim of independence)? | Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful? | That you send it (not) back-- if you are truthful? | ||
88 | Thus, then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah, | Thus if he is of those brought nigh, | Then if he is one of those drawn nigh (to Allah), | ||
89 | (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights. | Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight. | Then happiness and bounty and a garden of bliss. | ||
90 | And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand, | And if he is of those on the right hand, | And if he is one of those on the right hand, | ||
91 | (For him is the salutation), "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand. | Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand. | Then peace to you from those on the right hand. | ||
92 | And if he be of those who treat (Truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong, | But if he is of the rejecters, the erring, | And if he is one of the rejecters, the erring ones, | ||
93 | For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water. | Then the welcome will be boiling water | He shall have an entertainment of boiling water, | ||
94 | And burning in Hell-Fire. | And roasting at hell-fire. | And burning in hell. | ||
95 | Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainly. | Lo! this is certain truth. | Most surely this is a certain truth. | ||
96 | So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme. | Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. | Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. |
